More donations received from abroad
Hurricane relief continues to reach Belize in the form of donations from foreign governments and organisations. Our neighbour to the west, Guatemala, has dispatched a twenty-six-person team and equipment to assist in general cleanup and road maintenance in the south. The Guatemalans will stay for a month and are assigned to assist the crews from the Ministry of Works. The Belize Government will supply fuel, room, board and a small stipend to the Guatemalan relief workers. The Embassy of Japan has also weighed in with a contribution toward the recovery efforts. In a ceremony scheduled for Friday morning, a visiting diplomat will hand over more than one hundred and eighty thousand dollars in supplies consisting of eighty tents and fifteen hundred blankets. And in Belmopan this morning, president of COCESNA, Eduardo Marin, made a forty thousand dollar cash contribution toward government’s efforts at recovery in south Stann Creek and Toledo. COCESNA is the corporation responsible for managing Central America’s system of civil aviation. Belize has been a member since 1996.
