C.A. labour ministers meet in Belize

Story Picture
The conference the Prime Minister was addressing this morning was the Meeting of Ministers of Labour of Central America and the Dominican Republic. The ministers are in Belize to discuss various labour issues to prepare themselves as a region before attending the twelfth Annual Inter-American Labour Ministers meeting to be held in Canada later this month. According to Belize’s Labour Minister, Valdemar Castillo, workers must be protected at all costs.

“We need to take a look at how best we can defend the workers more. At the same time, we will be discussing the strengthening of social dialogue. It is the belief of the ministers of labour of the region that the time of strikes and confrontation are over. We need to try to come up with a formula whereby we bring all the social actors together, that is worker, employer and the government. We want to strengthen the tripartite partnership. So instead of having confrontation, we should be having co-operation. We need to talk, and talk and talk, so as to arrive at a peaceful solution of the industrial disputes.”

The conference, being held at the Radisson Fort George in Belize City, ends on Saturday.
