Belize Territorial Dispute Referendum Bill 2019, Now Law
Government is inching closer and closer to setting a new date for a referendum. At news time, there is word that having been passed in the House of Representative and Senate, the Belize Territorial Dispute Referendum Bill 2019 has landed on the desk of the Governor General and has received his assent. The Prime Minister will now request a writ of referendum, setting in train the referendum on whether or not the territorial claim by Guatemala should be taken to the International Court of Justice for final resolution. We won’t hazard a guess for a date, but we do know with the new law, the referendum can be held within two weeks of the request. There still is the case pending before the Chief Justice which has been adjourned for April twenty-ninth in which government is seeking to discharge the interim injunction.
