Belmopan developer meets with GOB, BEL, BWSL
On the heels of Tuesday’s demonstration, this morning the Mayor of Belmopan Anthony Chanona, developer of the East Piccini Housing Project, Salvador Habet, representatives of Belize Water Services Limited, Belize Electricity Limited and Area Representative Agripino Cawich, met this morning to discuss problems facing the housing project. The City Council maintains that under the Subdivision Guidelines of the Reconstruction and Development Corporation, RECONDEV, infrastructure is the developer’s responsibility. However, Habet claims that the contract he signed does not stipulate that he is responsible for putting in water, electricity and sewer lines. Habet says that the project was offered to him by Area Representative Agripino Cawich in 1999 and claims Cawich promised him that Government would foot the bill for the utilities. News 5 made several attempts to contact Cawich about this matter, but we were unsuccessful. The parties are scheduled to meet again on Friday.
