New hotel for Ambergris; Galeria Maya on hold?
The cloud on the world’s tourism industry will hopefully not affect several big projects now underway in Belize. Three weeks ago groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the new Avalon Reef Resort on Northern Ambergris Caye. At two hundred and forty-two units, the hotel will be the country’s largest. The forty million-dollar investment will employ over a thousand people during construction and three hundred once it opens. Another even larger hotel project which broke ground with much fanfare earlier this year seems to have slowed down, however. Work on Galeria Maya, a massive hotel and casino complex on Four Mile Lagoon near the Corozal Free Zone, slated for completion in eighteen months, has reportedly never really gotten off the ground. Requests for an update from the project’s lead partner, Belizean businessman Glenn Godfrey, have been met with silence.
