Guyanese Attorney Dexter Todd Called to the Bar in Order to Represent Mason
As we told you, Guyanese attorney, Dexter Todd, had to be called to the bar in order for him to practice law in Belize and represent William ‘Danny’ Mason. The thirty-eight-year-old attorney says his law career spans over a decade. After being sworn in, Todd told the media that he is not an attorney who tries tricks in court. He says that he is for fairness in order to ensure that his client, in this case, Mason, is afforded a fair trial.
Dexter Todd, Attorney for William ‘Danny’ Mason
“My career in law spans maybe over seventeen, eighteen years. I was a former police officer back in Guyana and I have done a lot of prosecuting work. I still do operate as a special prosecutor for the state in Guyana. But I am defense counsel. I have had some of the most, I believe, interesting cases that have afforded me an opportunity to represent in the time. I have always views the law as an opportunity, this I mean an opportunity in representing clients, an opportunity to really enforce the law and to really ensure that justice is served. Some people have the misguided notion that if you, once you are a defense counsel there are certain challenges and old tricks that you bring. I can tell you this is not one attorney that does that. I am for fairness. I am to ensure that my client is getting a fair opportunity and that the law and the provisions in the law that are afforded in Belize are afforded to him.”

“At what point were you contacted by Mr. Mason?”
Dexter Todd
“This was a few weeks ago. I have not had an opportunity to look at the deposition and the evidence and I would hope to have that opportunity with the leave of the court today.”
Hipolito Novelo
“But you are familiar with the basis of the entire case and the allegations?”
Dexter Todd
“I am following what is common knowledge. I am not too sure that what is common knowledge is evidence in the case. So I will reserve any comment in relation to the case until I have an opportunity to look at what the evidence is. I have not read that.”

“Do you know if Mr. Herbert Panton who was the previous attorney will play any advisory role in the continuation of the trial?”
Dexter Todd
“I have not had an opportunity because I came yesterday, to speak with counsels who were before. I am endeavoring in doing that today because I would want to have an appreciation of everything that has gone on prior to my arrival and to maybe seek advice from them in relation to works that were already done in relation to the matter so we can move forward. It is not to; I believe, stop or ignore their contribution made but basically continue from there.”
