Looking at ALL Angles of Cyber Bullying

The Attorney General’s Ministry is working on a piece of legislation that would address cyber-bullying. The government has long since been working on the legislation but it was recently this year that leaked nude pictures of females, including a teenager in her uniform, caused an uproar and prompted the government to fast track its progress on the new legislation. But as Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte explains, it’s not a quick and easy process. At the moment, according to Peyrefitte, lawmakers are discussing whether or not there should be a penalty for persons in nude videos and pictures. Here is how he explained it.

“We are considering responsibility as well. People complain about videos being out there, adults; sticking to adults now. Should we put in that piece legislation that maybe it is an offence to make a video like that, maybe it is an offence for you to allow someone to make a video like that. We have to start taking responsibility. If you don’t want a video like that with you out there, don’t make one. So should there be a penalty for someone who makes one? See all of these things are not easy answers because a you should have in a robust debate about any proposed bill, there is a lot of back and forth. As we go back and forth, it takes time. It eats up time but we want to make sure that when we present a bill to the House that it is one that is tight, well written and that we can depend on with people who commit infractions.”

“So basically you will hold people accountable for their actions.”

“No. I am saying that is part of the debate. When it comes to children, they are children. They don’t have the ability to consent so therefore they cannot be penalize for anything that they might be involve in that level. For adults, there has been a discussion that maybe they should pay some penalty for engaging in that type of activity on camera and allowing it to get out as well. That is not saying that we will pass legislation to that effect but the discussion has come to that as well.”
