Budding Belizean Cyclists to Train with Mexican Professional
Budding cyclists Christian Avila of Belmopan and Jyven Gonzales of San Ignacio are being given the opportunity to travel to Mexico and train. The two young cyclists have been chosen to do a month’s training with one of Mexico’s top coaches and professional cyclists, Carlos Manuel Hernandez Santana. It is the hope for the two young men to gain a vast amount of knowledge and experience. There is, however, one obstacle that they need to get over and that’s financing. The cyclists are raising monies to make the trip and cover their expenses. Today, cyclist Tariq Cano and Avila explained why this trip is important for the cyclists to make.
Tariq Cano, Cyclist
“Great coach. Great athlete and he is giving the opportunity to these two young men to go train with him for one month, develop their skills and become better. Carlos has produced some of Mexico’s great. Right now he has his two sons who are part of the national selection of Mexico. I believe the coach has risen to the pro level and can take these two young men further than any of us here in Belize can do especially his knowledge and whatnot in cycling. So they should come back to Belize ready, not to only to dominate juniors but elite as well.”
Christian Avila, Cyclist
“First thing that went through my mind is that I got the opportunity of a life time to experience a lot of new things, get professional training as well as gain a vast amount of knowledge from a very experience rider. I believe that me going to Mexico will allow me to gain a lot of knowledge and experience which I will bring back and share with others in Belize. The whole point of going to Mexico is that we isolate ourselves, immerse ourselves in what it means to train full times and be a full time cyclist. It is just living the lifestyle of a serious cyclist, training every day and get to bed on time.”
Tariq Cano
“We want to reach out to the public to support these guys, We are looking to raise anywhere from fifteen hundred to two thousand to cover all of their expenses for the month, training in Mexico.”
The young cyclists are scheduled to leave Saturday. If you would like to assist in any way, Cano can be contacted through Facebook.
