Two die in weekend highway accidents
A pair of traffic accidents over the holiday weekend has left two men dead. Police say that around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday Nick Chan, nineteen, of Palmetto Street in Orange Walk, was driving his car on the Northern Highway when he collided into the rear of a parked bus on the side of the road between miles nine and ten. Chan died instantly. The other passenger in the car, Ian Enriquez, was more fortunate. He suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.
The other accident, which occurred on Saturday, has left thirty-four year old Raumir Betancourt with a slew of charges to answer to ranging from manslaughter by negligence to drunk driving. Police say Betancourt was travelling along the Yo Creek Road in Orange Walk when between miles five and six he ran into Alfonso Sosa, a fifty-three year old farmer of the same village. Sosa was cycling in the same direction as Betancourt when he was hit. He was treated at the Orange Walk Hospital and later transferred to the K.H.M.H., but later succumbed to his injuries.
