OCEANA’s Hands Across the Sand 2019, a Success
Over the weekend, Belizeans across the country joined hands on beaches, across bridges, in conference rooms and along seawalls and other public areas to celebrate OCEANA’s 2019 Hands Across the Sand initiative. The activity is to show solidarity against offshore oil development in Belize. The environmental non-profit reports that over two hundred ocean-lovers participated in the ninth year of the celebration. Back in 2017, government made the historic decision when it passed an indefinite offshore oil moratorium, safeguarding the protection of marine ecosystem. Belize joined eight other countries who partake in Hands Across the Sand as a platform to promote clean energy alternatives to fossil fuels. The symbolic barriers created against offshore oil began after the BP oil spill in 2010.
