Belize & Guatemala Foreign Ministers Meet at O.A.S. Office in Adjacency Zone
Earlier today, the foreign ministers of Belize and Guatemala, Wilfred Elrington and Sandra Jovel Polanco met at the O.A.S. Office at the Adjacency Zone in the west. The meeting was to take stock of the progress made by both countries in the territorial dispute. Following the May eighth referendum, the people of both countries have agreed to take the dispute to the International Court of Justice for final resolution. Foreign Minister Jovel congratulated Belize on the successful referendum, which now paves the way for the case to be heard at The Hague. In the month ahead, both ministers will brief the members of the O.A.S. as well as the Group of Friends of the Belize-Guatemala process. During the meeting, Foreign Minister Elrington reiterated the need for confidence-building measures for the Sarstoon River to minimize tension and avoid conflict.
