P.S.E. Results are in!

The Primary School Examination results are in. Today, the Ministry of Education released the full report on how students performed for this year’s P.S.E. – but before we get into the overall performance of the seven thousand, fifteen students who sat this year’s exam – we’ll tell you about the top twenty-five performing students.  At the top of the coveted list is Jasmine Espat of Saint Andrew Anglican Primary School of San Ignacio, Cayo. Espat garnered three hundred and eighty-six points. Second place went to Ann Elyse Fleser Perdue of La Isla Bonita in San Pedro Elementary School. The third place student is Jasmine Faber of Saint Peter Claver Primary School in Toledo district. The rest of the top twenty five is rounded out by five other students from the Cayo district; eleven from the Belize district; four from Toledo and five from Orange Walk. There were no top twenty-five placements from the Corozal and Stann Creek districts. Later this week, we’ll tell you more about some of these top performers. Now, back to the overall performance in the four subject areas. According to the Ministry, the results show that the national mean performance by subject on P.S.E. has remained more or less stable over the last ten years with a slight upward trend in three of the four subjects. The report shows that seventy-percent of the students passed the test with a ‘D’ or higher. In Math, fifty-five percent of the students scored with a ‘D’ or above, with a little over one percent increase in improved mean score. The passes in Science have dropped significantly compared to last year. This year’s mean performance shows that forty-six percent of the students scored in the satisfactory or above ranges – last year sixty percent of students scored ‘D’ or higher. In Social Studies, a two point two percent increase in mean scores was recorded for this year, with over sixty percent of the students obtaining a ‘C’ or higher.  On Tuesday, we will reach out to the exams unit to get a full picture of the meaning of these results.
