Sedi Goes Before the Court of Appeal

Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington

Foreign Minister Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington appeared before the Court of Appeal this morning where, in his private capacity as a shareholder in the legally embattled Progresso Heights Limited, is appealing the outcome of a matter before the high court.  According to Elrington, he believes that there may have been financial impropriety taking place within the company and that going to the Caribbean Court of Justice, in the first instance, was a means of ventilating those charges.

“A lot of money involved and there has been no proper accounting, so all we are saying is, let an independent person go in to do the accounting to see in fact if whether the company has been operating properly and whether the shareholders have been treated in the way that they should be treated under the law.”

“Now sir, can you assure us that your claim here wasn’t specifically as a power move against Progresso Heights because they were suing you for these titles they say you owned and didn’t hand over to them?

Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington

“Actually I…that was the first case that was initiated.  It was in consequence of my initiating that action that the other action brought.  So it had nothing to do with that, I mean that is trivial.  But if you invest in a company and a company grosses eleven or twelve million dollars and there is no proper accounting for that, that is a serious matter and that is a matter of public interest apart from the private interest so that it has got to be looked into and to ask the court to appoint an inspector to go in and look into the matters, to my mind, cannot be more reasonable.”

“Are you able to tell us what was the resolution of the claim against you from Progresso Heights?  Did they actually ever get those titles resolved that they say you had and you say you actually never did receive?”

Wilfred ‘Sedi’ Elrington

“Oh, the people got their titles.  Because, you see, it happens all the time when you’re dealing with legal matters that titles become lost, all the time.  That happens all the time and there’s a very simple procedure.  You simply apply to the court for or to the registrar in this case for new titles.  After thirty days the loss is published and then the titles are issued.  The reason why the case reached the C.C.J. was because, in my view, of the very improper and unethical and despicable procedure that was adopted in dealing with this matter.  It is my conviction and knowledge that in fact that there was a lot of fraudulent and improper irregular activity that took place and I wanted to have that ventilated.”
