P.U.P. Leader Calls on P.S.U. President to Recover Hilltop Property

At the beginning of the month, the Public Service Union which represents tens of thousands of public officers held its annual general meeting. During the meeting, an election took place and Gerald Henry bested Doreth Obermayer by more than one hundred and thirty votes for the post of president. Henry is joined by Trisha Perez as the union’s Secretary General and Attorney Jacquelyn Willoughby as the vice president. Recently, the P.S.U. took on the Belmopan City Council in an attempt to recover its Hilltop headquarters. In fact, prior to the AGM, Obermayer led a protest in front of the city council. But the new president does not seem to want to follow in Obermayer’s footsteps. Henry told News Five that he first needs to look at the case before making further steps. He also said that the next option would be to secure another property and building for the union. Commenting on the issue is Opposition Leader John Briceño who called on the P.S.U.’s membership to ensure that is president recover the union’s HQ.

“As I am told that proper wasn’t given out. It was done in a very short time. Very few people showed up, I mean just a few hundred people showed up when there are thousands of union members so it makes you question. I would hope that the union or at least the members would not allow their president to standby and allow their headquarters to be given to somebody else just because he is very friendly with the government because he also needs to answer to the membership. When we were in government we felt that it was very important for the P.S.U. to have their headquarters, a place where they can meet and have their planning session and it was big enough to have a recreation area. We gave it to the in good faith or worked with them for them to have but now to have the U.D.P. city council sell it underneath them I think that is disgraceful. It is unacceptable. The Prime Minister who likes to believe that he is the knight and shining armor to come in and save the day, he should have stepped in long time ago and informed the Belmopan City Council that they need to this headquarters to the union. It belongs to them.”
