P.U.P. Leader Says Party Ready for Village Elections

John Briceño

Village council elections are scheduled for this month. Elections will take place between June twenty third and the twenty-eighth. Village councils across the country have been dissolved and while not much attention is given to these elections, this year’s result can serve as a glimpse into the political future of Belize. Thousands of voters living in hundreds of villages in rural Belize will decide on either of the two major political parties. P.U.P. Leader John Briceño says that ideally, village council elections should not be political.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“I think it is very important for us to point out that we looking from village to village. Where we see that there are competent people working on behalf of their villagers, we believe that we should not get in and put anybody. We need to support those people. It is again, respect. We need to respect these people in these communities. Where we see that there is a village council that is not operating in the interest of their villagers then we are going to go and support. I mean we are going to go and put a team. In the division that I represent in Orange Walk Central, I have one Village, San Estevan and personally, I refuse to put a group to go and fight for the village council because I do not want to further divide our communities.”
