A Writ of Habeas Corpus for Dion Bruce

Dion Bruce, wanted by the United States government for a murder he reportedly committed in Chicago in July 2010, continues to fight an extradition request, despite being locked up at the Belize Central Prison.  He was picked up by Belize City police six years ago and since then, Bruce’s case has been meandering through the justice system.  Today, he appeared before the Court of Appeal where attorney Anthony Sylvestre applied for a writ of habeas corpus on his client’s behalf.  The government, as we understand, objected to that motion on the basis of a pending appeal.  That appeal, however, is not a habeas corpus application but rather a judicial review.  Despite the technical nature of the application, it appears to be accepted that the warrant on which Bruce is presently being held is not valid.  That notwithstanding, the question remains whether an application for a habeas corpus could have been introduced in December 2017; a decision which the court will ultimately have to determine.  The thirty-four-year-old is accused of shooting and killing Aaron Carter in Chicago nine years ago.
