Family argument ends in shooting

Story Picture
Another shooting occurred on Tuesday in Belize City, but without fatal consequences. Thirty-two year old Harry Staine was shot Tuesday morning during a fight with his nephew. According to police, Staine and eighteen-year-old Kenyon Andrews, both residents of thirty-seven Wagner’s Lane, became embroiled in an argument around eight in the morning. Staine says Andrews went upstairs and returned with a thirty-eight-calibre pistol and shot him. Today, the Andrews family told News 5 that for some time now Staine has been harassing the family. According to Audra Andrews, she was home when the argument started and alleges that her uncle, Harry Staine, was the one who started the fight and her brother Kenyon did not shoot him. Andrews says Kenyon, who lives upstairs of her uncle in the family house, had just put his bicycle in the upstairs kitchen when Staine told him he couldn’t put the bike there. Andrews says her brother was rushing to go to work and did not pay attention to Staine and that’s when her uncle started threatening and assaulting them.

“He even wanted to fight with my step-father. After that my brother grabbed the machete that was right by the door here, and he (Staine) said, “Oh! You want to grab machete.” He then went in his house and came out with a machete. As soon as he went in, he came out with a machete and a bag of pints. He must have already had that set there, since he came out with it so quick. My brother ran upstairs when he came outside, and I ran halfway down the steps. He told me if I wanted to fight too and I said “Well he’s my brother and it’ll be war since you say you’ll kill me. The blood will shed.” I ran up more, and he stoned a pint. I caught it and stoned it back at him. He kept stoning pints, and as they landed on the veranda, I picked them up and stoned it back at him. Then I ran inside and he still tried to stone pints. He ran out of pints, went inside his house and brought more. My brother came downstairs and I stayed inside.”

“Police are reporting that your brother went upstairs, got this thirty-eight, came down back and shot your uncle. Did this happen?”

Audra Andrews

“No ma’am. He didn’t come down with any gun, because he stayed right by the door inside.”

“Did you uncle get shot?”

Audra Andrews

“Yes, he got shot twice. But everyone that he provoked, all the children that he messed with, the boys that hang around with my brother, everyone was around. We didn’t know who shot him. But now my brother is arrested for the shooting and you can’t tell if he shot him because everybody was around, so you don’t know who really shot him.”

Staine has been hospitalised at the K.H.M.H. with a bullet wound to the chest. This morning in the company of his mother and an attorney Andrews went to the police station. He has been arrested and charged with dangerous harm and the use of deadly means of harm.
