PM Says Income Tax/GST Merger Concerns are Baseless
Prime Minister Barrow responded to those claims as baseless and unsubstantiated, notwithstanding the fact that the opposition supports the idea of streamlining the tax system.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow
“At least he was good enough to concede that the notion of the amalgamation as an effort to streamline the entire tax system and to make it more effective and easier in terms of not just the collection of government taxes but the aspect of service delivery to the public, at least he conceded that that is very much desirable and so I understand him to be supporting the objective. But to get into the question of personalities and to suggest that the exercise will be used as some kind of instrument for political leverage, that the government would seek to punish enemies and reward friends. Madame Speaker, that is outrageous and what compounds the outrage is the fact that the Leader of the Opposition offers no kind of evidence to support this. It is all hearsay and innuendo and completely unsubstantiated slander, quite frankly.”
