Darrell Bradley Takes Post as Senator President
Two new senators were sworn in today. It was Darrell Bradley’s first day as President of the Senate. He was appointed to the post after Lee Mark Chang stepped aside to pursue a career in politics. While attorney Michel Chebat has on several occasions temporarily stepped in for the P.U.P.’s lead Senator Eamon Courtenay, today, he took over the post permanently. Chebat is now the lead opposition senator after Courtenay stepped down to dedicate his full attention to his new appointment as the Opposition Leader’s representative on the Belize/Guatemala Committee that is working along with Belize’s I.C.J. International Legal Team. Both men pledged to uphold the sacred duties of the upper house and carry themselves with decorum.
Darrell Bradley, President of the Senate
“I am duty bound to be dispassionate, judicious, impartial and fair. But know that while I am only here to chair these proceedings, I still carry with me the same admiration and faith in you as I did when I was a child. The faith and hope that you do justice to the people that you represent, that you speak with integrity and wisdom and that you use this platform to champion the greatest aspiration for our people for a better life.”
Michel Chebat, Lead P.U.P. Senator
“Mr. President I know that in the past you have been an advocate for accountability and transparency and we certainly hope Mr. President that those characteristics will be brought to this house. As this is my initial presentation in my new capacity here in the Senate I also wish to express my commitment to upholding the greatest tradition of this house and to ensure that I never descend into the type of behavior that we saw in the house on Friday, the type of derogative remarks, and scandalous behavior Mr. President. That is my commitment to you and our colleagues in the Senate.”
