U.D.P. Senators Respond to Concerns
Responding to the concerns raised by the senators were U.D.P. Senators Michael Peyrefitte and Stephen Duncan. Peyrefitte and Duncan asserted that in order for businesses to avoid penalties, businesses need to be tax compliant.
Stephen Duncan, U.D.P. Senator
“As you read the legislation you get the sense that the onus is being shifted from those parties who it is felt have some degree of control over the operations of entities and are probably in a position to be able to ensure that certain processes and structures are put in place to ensure that taxes are paid. It doesn’t reduce the concerns but certainly at least in terms of understanding that people at the top have the ability to be able to ensure that certain things happen within an organization.”
Michael Peyrefitte, U.D.P. Senator
“It doesn’t matter which political party is in power. If your books are in order and your business organized nobody can’t touch you. If you want to look at my bank account, my business with my law partner, knock yourself out. There is no secret. There is nothing to hide. If you are not cheating or avoiding your taxes then you have nothing to worry about, no matter which P is in power. So don’t worry Senator Chebat for the next twenty five years that the U.D.P. is in power you will not have to worry. In terms of giving broad powers to the Director General, how many times have we passed legislations and the cry has always been that you have legislation but it does not have any teeth. Or we need to put power in the hands of people who are not political directorate. This person is appointed by the Public Service Commission.”
