Derrick Tracey is Gunned Down on Sittee Street

Derrick Tracey

The murder count continues to ratchet up even as police continue investigations to crack a slew of murders in the past days including that of a highly respected doctor from the U.S. who was killed along with a tour guide in San Pedro. This afternoon in Belize City, the all too familiar sounds of gunshots were heard in the south side. Dangriga resident, Derrick Tracy, was visiting with his sister when his life was snuffed out. Tracy was on Sittee Street when he came under from an unknown gunman who disappeared as soon as he had delivered the fatal shots. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A labourer from Dangriga, who arrived in Belize City on Sunday, lost his life this afternoon in a deadly shooting incident.  Derrick Tracey was in the vicinity of Sittee Street, near the entrance of an alley when a lone gunman opened fire on him.  Residents reported that sometime around one o’clock as many as five gunshots were heard in the immediate area.  When they enquired into the shooting, they learned that someone had been fatally injured.  That individual was later identified as the thirty-three-year-old construction worker of a Commerce Bight address.  He had been shot in the left lower chest, right arm, left wrist and right rib area.  Tracey and his girlfriend, Valerie August, were visiting his sister when someone approached from the direction of Ebony Street and blindsided him with a volley of shots.  Tracey’s killer is described as a person of medium built, with a clear complexion who was seen wearing a red and white, striped tee shirt and a cap on his head.  It is reported that the gunman then ran through Tracey’s sister’s yard and then into an adjacent property, making his way unto Ebony Street.  Recovered from the scene were five Aguila Auto expended shells.  According to a neighbour who wished to remain anonymous, the couple had just approached her and asked for a drink of water before proceeding towards his sister’s house.  Shortly thereafter they were startled by the sound of gunfire.  A police investigation is ongoing.
