Derrick Tracey was shot and killed on Wednesday afternoon in Belize City as he visited with his sister at her home on Sittee Street. Tracey was along with his girlfriend when a lone gunman pounced and opened fire on him. The Dangriga resident was shot multiple times and was pronounced dead on arrival at the K.H.M.H. Assistant Superintendent of Police Alejandro Cowo provided details of the latest Belize City homicide.
ASP Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Belize City
“On yesterday’s date, just after one o’clock Belize City police visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital whereupon arrival Derrick Tracey, a thirty-three-year-old Belizean from Dangriga with several apparent gunshot wounds. He was declared dead on arrival. What police have gathered so far is that Derrick was walking on Ebony Street along with his girlfriend when someone came out of a yard and fired several shots in his direction, causing the abovementioned injuries. We know that he had two days since he had come to Belize City, as he is originally from Dangriga, and he was visiting some family members when this incident occurred.”
According to investigators, establishing a motive has been challenging since Tracey had no previous run-ins with the law in Belize City. He arrived here in the city on Sunday and was spending time with his girlfriend.

“This is something that we are trying to establish. We do not know if it is robbery. We are looking at surveillance cameras in that area to see how we can assist the investigation.”
