Public service pageant on Friday
Think pageant and more than likely the word beauty comes to mind. Not this time though, as Public Service Union women test their knowledge of the public service at Miss P.S.U. One of the organisers, Diane Parks, says six contestants will vie for the coveted title on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Holy Redeemer Parish Hall in Belize City.

“We’re concentrating on talent and how the girls are able to deliver themselves in terms of the questions that will be asked. The questions are based on the union, so depending on how verse they are in their union, then they’ll be able to give a good response.”

“Where are the representatives drawn from?”

“We had asked each district that they send a representative, so we have six contestants, one representing Orange Walk and Corozal, Belize District, Belmopan, Punta Gorda, Stann Creek and San Ignacio.”

“Why should people come to this pageant?”

“I would like to take this time to extend an invitation to all and especially the public officer, because it’s not a beauty pageant. Most times when pageants are being held it’s beauty, but we’re concentrating on evening wear, office wear, question and answer and we have other forms of entertainment. I think that it’s going to be a night of fun and one for you to bring your family to.”

“Usually when it’s not a beauty pageant, people would say it’s a fundraising venture. It is?”

“Well to some extent, we’re trying to see if we can raise funds because the person who wins is supposed to represent Belize in Trinidad and Tobago. That is going to cost us quite a sum of money, so we’re hoping that we will make a little profit that we can sponsor our contestant with all that is required because she will be competing with all the girls from the Caribbean countries.”
Tickets for Miss P.S.U. can be bought at the door on the night of the show. Adults are ten dollars, children three.
