Shipyard welder electrocuted while working on boat
In a tragic incident in the Orange Walk District, a Mennonite welder of Shipyard was killed after he was accidentally electrocuted. On Monday, thirty-seven year old David Schmidt was welding his boat on the New River along with Juan Martinez, also of the village, when the incident happened. Water and electricity do not mix and a sudden surge sent Schmidt into the water. The body was later retrieved and transported to the Northern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The police were alerted sometime around four-thirty p.m. says Inspector Selvin Tillett of the Orange Walk Police.

“Orange Walk police received information from the Northern Regional Hospital of a Mennonite identified as David Schmidt, thirty-seven years Belizean welder of Camp thirteen Shipyard was taken to the hospital apparently dead. We visited the hospital where the body was viewed with burn wounds to the right side of abdomen. Apparently, the deceased, along with one Juan Martinez, also of camp thirteen Shipyard, were welding a boat in the river when he, Mr. Schmidt accidentally electrocuted himself causing him to fall in the water. Schmidt was retrieved from the water and transported to the Northern Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.”
Foul play is not suspected.
