Accused Murderer Out of Bail
Donald Heredia, an alleged murder suspect, was able to secure bail through the Supreme Court after sitting behind bars for more than three years awaiting trial. Heredia is said to be a mental patient, who was fit to re-enter society and would not have posed a threat. On Friday, attorney Darrell Bradley was successful in securing his bail in the sum of twenty thousand dollars plus two sureties of ten thousand dollars each, in the courtroom of Justice Frances Cumberbatch. While a number of stringent conditions were placed on the accused, there are still concerns for his safety and whether or not he will commit another offense. Heredia must report to the Port Loyola Clinic and the Raccoon Street Police Station, undergo medical and psychiatric evaluations and cannot leave the country or breach bail conditions. According to Justice Cumberbatch, the congested court calendar shows that Heredia’s murder case would not have been tried this year and there is uncertainty when in 2020 he would have had his day in court. Heredia was charged back in August 2016 for the murder of Caye Caulker resident, Jennifer Coleman, whose throat was slit at her apartment on the island. A neighbor recalled seeing Coleman exit the apartment holding her neck as blood gushed from her injury. She collapsed on the street just outside the apartment complex and by the time she was rushed to the polyclinic two blocks away, she was pronounced dead. It is believed that Coleman knew her attacker and likely invited him into her apartment.
