B.E.L. donates to football camp

Story Picture
So far this week we’ve look at one summer camp for budding artists and another that emphasises conservation. Tonight, thanks to a generous contribution by B.E.L., we can report on an effort that focuses on football. The Berger 404/B.E.L. football camp will service one hundred and thirty children age eight to seventeen. B.E.L.’s corporate communications manager Neville Samuels presented a ten thousand dollar cheque this morning to Berger Alumni president Emerson Guild.

“The money will be used for football uniforms, for the T-shirts that we’re going to be wearing at the camp, it will be used to pay our transportation cost throughout the month that we’ll be doing camp. We have the B.N.F.A. participating with us and we’re using the national trainer, Mr. Ernest Norris, who is FIFA credentialed. He oversees everything we do as far as the fundamentals of football. The other part to the camp is done by myself. That’s the whole round with leadership, health, sportsmanship, manners, respect all that stuff.”

“What are you hoping they will learn about football?”

Emerson Guild

“We do fundamentals, and if they get the fundamentals, then the level of the game is already growing in their minds. So we are hoping that they get…that it is by fundamentals and exercise that they will develop further.”

Neville Samuels

“Last year they approached us for some assistance and we weren’t sure what direction the camp was headed, so we donated some footballs last year for about eight hundred dollars. But we assessed the camp and saw that basically it is a very good initiative because they are concerned not only about developing football talents for the youths, but they take a holistic approach to the entire development of football. They do more than just football skills, they also do personal hygiene, life skills, first aid kind of things.”

“How do you as a company decide what to contribute to?”

Neville Samuels

“Well basically what we do, every year we have a corporate communications programme for the year whereby we go out an identify initiatives and also we have people approach us. Collectively we look at it and decide were we can best help as the company based in terms of the business that we do and that’s pretty much the way that we go in terms of deciding.”

Sports is a big thing for you though?”

Neville Samuels

“Yeah it is, because sports is big for Belize. It’s one of those areas where corporate sponsors can step out and really make an impact.”

Twenty volunteer coaches will assist with the annual camp which runs from July ninth to August fourth at St. Martin de Porres field in the Lake Independence area of Belize City.
