Zoo hosts conservation summer camp

Story Picture
Yesterday we highlighted the House of Culture and Young Artist Association Summer camp which gives children a chance to have fun and explore their artistic talents. While that activity is already underway, the Belize Zoo is gearing up for its eighth annual conservation camp to be held at the Tropical Education Centre. According to the Zoo’s Education Director, Celso Poot, they are still accepting applications for the two sessions which start July ninth.

“During camp students will get an opportunity to work with zoo keepers, see how the zoo keepers prepare the diet for the animals in the zoo. We will hike the Manatee Forest Reserve, we will work on a nursery and plant some seeds for a hardwood reforestation project at the Tropical Education Centre. We will watch night videos, natural history of Belize, and the big event will be the annual clean-up campaign along the Western Highway.”

“This is not only to have fun, it’s also for education.”

“That’s right, summer camp aimed at allowing Belizean youths to explore, develop an appreciation for the natural environment. Also for them to have a real life experience in their natural environment and for them to see how they can assist in the conservation of our environment.”

Registration for the camp costs twenty five dollars which covers meals, lodging, and field trips. Poot says spaces are limited and if you would like to sign up your child, you can reach him at the Belize Zoo by calling 081-3010.
