An attempt on the life of twenty-seven-year-old Rafael Usher, known to many as Ragga, was made on Wednesday night as he was walking along Central American Boulevard. Usher was met with a volley of shots by persons on a red motorcycle who rode up next to him and opened fire.
Supt. Alejandro Cowo, O.C., C.I.B., Eastern Division
“Last night at about 8:30 p.m., police visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where they observed Raphael Usher, twenty-seven-years-old, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the body.”
Usher, who has been marked for death at least once before in September 2010, was shot in the stomach and in the thigh.
Supt. Alejandro Cowo
“What we understand is that Mr. Usher was walking on Central American Boulevard heading towards Arlington Drive when two persons onboard a motorcycle stopped beside him and one of the male persons fired several shots in his direction which resulted in him receiving gunshot wounds to his body. He is presently admitted in a critical condition at this moment.”
According to Superintendent Alejandro Cowo, an initial investigation reveals that Usher was involved in an altercation prior to the shooting incident and that he may have been tailed by his assailants. That misunderstanding reportedly took place in the Port Loyola neighborhood.
“What we understand is that apparently there was a previous altercation amongst them prior to the shooting. The possibility is that yes, he was being followed by the persons on the motorcycle.”
Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance footage from cameras in the area which may be of use in apprehending a second suspect.
Supt. Alejandro Cowo
“There are several cameras within that area that police are at this moment viewing. One person is detained and police are looking for another person.”
“Sir, are you able to disclose where that prior incident may have occurred, in what part of Belize City?”
Supt. Alejandro Cowo
“In the vicinity where he resides, that is in the Jane Usher area.”
On September 23rd, 2010, Usher escaped grave injury when a lone gunman fired multiple rounds in his direction at a residence on Arlington Drive. He managed to get away by leaping from the second floor of the concrete building. That was almost nine years ago. Tonight he remains in critical but stable condition at the K.H.M.H.
