House of Culture to host summer camp

Story Picture
If your children are out of school and have nothing to do, then listen closely because the House of Culture in Belize City is hosting a summer camp for one hundred and fifty youths ranging in age from eight to eighteen. According to Jason Guerrero, assistant co-ordinator for the House of Culture, the fun and educational experience is organised for and by young people.

Jason Guerrero, Assistant Co-ordinator, H.O.C.

“This is the first time that the House of Culture is holding the summer camp. The history of the camp goes back five years. It began as a camp with Lauren Burgess. She’s the one who actually began this along with Pamela Braun and a lot of other people five years ago. The camp has needed a new home, a permanent home and hopefully it will work here at the House of Culture with the funding of UNICEF. UNICEF has made it possible to have it this year. The House of Culture is also collaborating with the Young Artist Association and they are the ones who are mostly will design the camp. House of Culture is taking care of the administrative aspect of the camp. I think it’s a good marriage and we will see how well it works.”

Emory Young, Camp Director, YAA

“The Young Artist Association is helping with this camp because we have people involved with dancing, we have people who are good painters, good artists, and these camps pertain to these arts.

I think the camp will be a fun filled camp. We will have a lot of events for the kids. They will be doing drawing, painting, we have certain drug seminars scheduled. We have seminars with self-esteem, seminars about first aid, things that we think the people need to know. We have dancing and we’ll have them experience drums. It’s a lot of things to keep them real busy and also enjoying the summer.”

The camp will be held from July third to August ninth. Registration forms are available at the House of Culture on Regent Street.
