Changes for Foreign-Owned Buses Becomes Effective in September

Ewart Metzgen

So, how will these changes take place? The B.B.A. says that the Attorney General committed to getting this done over the next few days and that it may not have to go before Cabinet to accommodate the agreed terms.  The changes will come into effect by September of this year.  Here’s more from the association and the Belize Taxi Federation.

Ewart Metzgen, Secretary, Belize Bus Association

“With the AG explaining that with the S.I being repealed, what next needs to be done, he said it didn’t need to go to the House. It is like a special permit which can be done at the transport level to allow them to do just that one run. He had told us that by this Friday, what he needed to get done could be done by this Friday or by mid-week next week. He also said that if needed and all we wanted could be put into a new S.I, then they will do that and they will have those papers sent to us for us to go through it to see that what is in there is what is agreed up before it passes.”

“So, all these changes will take effect, effectively the first of September. So, at the end of this month, all those buses that are coming in will cease.”

“It also covers too, during Easter we have a lot of those Mexican buses that come into Belize City. It charters from Belize, so effective September first that stops. So, you use local bus operators.”
