Everal Martinez to Stand Trial for Rape and Murder of Baby Allyssa Nunez

Everal Martinez

In 2018, a toddler was raped and murdered while she was in the care of her stepfather at their Maskall home.  The mother of the child, Denika Flowers, was not there when the horrific incident occurred.  Her boyfriend, twenty-one-year-old Everal Martinez was eventually charged with the heinous crimes and has been on remand since then.  This morning, he was escorted to court for a preliminary inquiry. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

It ranks amongst the most utterly disgusting crimes committed in recent memory and when it was discovered in March 2018 that baby Allyssa Nunez died as a result of being sexually assaulted and struck over the head with a blunt instrument, there was great public outrage.  Allyssa was only seventeen months old when she was left in the care of her stepfather in Maskall Village.  Her biological parents were no longer together and Denika Flowers trusted her new boyfriend enough with custody of the toddler.  The unthinkable happened under his watch.

“All these different scenarios or evidence they have found on the baby, detecting that she had a gash to the head, probably, more than likely.  It is still unconfirmed as to what happened, why she had bleeding in the head, okay.  But what they can confirm on such note [is that] she was abused.  She was sexually abused also everybody knows that.”

That dastardly act was reportedly committed by twenty-one-year-old Everal Martinez while the child’s mother was said to have been away at work.  Shortly after Baby Allyssa was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, her father, Terrence Nunez, received an ominous text message.

“It stated that your baby is at the hospital, you gotta go and check that out.  So I went and I called the mother on WhatsApp and the same young man answered and I asked questions and then I came to the hospital and then I spoke to them and everything and then as time progressed we spoke to the, the doctor came because they were only allowing either the mom or the dad, but then it came to a point whereby it was very severe that the baby had many seizures before she came over to the K.H.M.H.”

In the wake of her tragic demise, Allyssa’s stepfather, now twenty-two, has been ordered to stand trial for rape and murder.  This morning, in the custody of a special team of police officers, Martinez was brought to court for a preliminary inquiry.  Before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford, evidence against him was presented and went unchallenged by his attorney.  At the end of the PI it was determined that there was a prima facie case against Martinez and he will stand trial in the October session of the Supreme Count where he will tried on seven counts, one for murder and six sexual assault charges, including rape.  Director of Public Prosecutions, Cheryl-Lyn Vidal spoke with the media following Martinez’s arraignment last year.

“We had, of course, intended to object to bail because of the seriousness of the offense, the likely sentence to be imposed, and the publicity this has garnered, which all go towards suggesting that he may not, later on, have submitted himself willingly to the jurisdiction of the court.  But we were actually informed before court sat, by the attorney for the defense, that he would not have been making any application for bail, because he understood that the victim had passed away, and he anticipated that a more serious charge would be levied subsequently.”

Those charges came in the form of a litany of additional counts, including rape of a child, assault of a child by penetration, attempted rape, attempted rape of a child, attempted assault of a child under the age of sixteen and attempted sexual assault of a child under the age of sixteen by penetration.  A total of seventeen statements have been submitted for use against the defendant, as well as images from the scene of the incident and the autopsy conducted on Baby Allyssa.  Everal Martinez remains on pretrial detention at the Hattieville Prison until October when the case is set to be heard.
