Are Police the Next Most Important to God? Commissioner Williams Says So
Commissioner Williams addressed the new recruits today – and that message started out about how tough it is to be a police officer. He told the graduates that they are going to be working in a thankless society and warned them to brace themselves for public criticism. While those words may have been a bit heavy for the new recruits to digest as they get ready to join the department, there was at least one complimentary line from their boss. Williams told the twenty-three graduates that the police are the next most important persons to God. It’s an interesting statement that drew a reaction from the crowd. Here’s more from his passionate presentation.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
“Well, let me tell you the task of a police officer is not an easy one, especially in today’s society where we police a society that has no thanks or regard for the work that we do. Notwithstanding that, it is still our duty to ensure that we must police those who don’t like us and we must police them in the manner as if they like us. That is what being a police is about. We listen to the news, we read the comments on Facebook everyday and we see the comments made about us in the media. But as professionals we are taught to ignore those things and to focus on where we where we want to go. No matter the amount of police we have on our streets, if we were to have one police per person in this country, there would still be crime; because no amount of law enforcement can completely eradicate crime. Even if you were to say if we are going to make everybody in the country police officers, there would still be crime because they will commit crime against themselves. So, crime is an ongoing thing but what we can do as law enforcement officers is to ensure that we do our best to minimize these occurrence of those crimes that we can prevent. No matter how good you do there will always be those out there who will criticize you. They will look for the simplest of flaw to ensure that they try to tear you down. So, it requires that you have a very strong spirit and a strong personality to be able to overcome those criticisms that you will face on a daily basis out there. Cuba Gooding said, I believe that police officers are modern day heroes because they protect us. And that is true. People don’t see it sometimes but you know what, the minute they find themselves becoming a victim of a crime, the first person they call upon is God; after God, the next person dah who? The police. Oh God, call the police. So, you’ll see, the next most important person next to God is the police.”
