Fatal Accident Claims Life of Ladyville Resident Jordy Bainton

A Ladyville resident left work, but never made it home. Forty-six-year-old Jordy Bainton was riding his bicycle on Chetumal Street when he was run over and crushed by a heavy duty truck near the roundabout on the Philip Goldson Highway. The traffic fatality happened just after five in the evening at the heavily trafficked roundabout. The sanitary engineer with the Belize Waste Control allegedly fell under the truck and was dragged about thirty-five feet before the truck came to a stop. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Just after five o’clock on Wednesday evening, a cyclist was crushed by a dump truck on the roundabout at the intersection of Chetumal Street and the Philip Goldson Highway. It would appear that both Jordy Bainton and the driver of the dump truck were travelling the same direction – exiting from Chetumal Street and were about to make their way up the highway – when the truck ran over Bainton. The forty-six-year-old was found motionless under the truck, was later removed and pronounced dead at the K.H.M.H. Ian Bainton says he was travelling home on a bus when he spotted his brother’s bike on the road.

“When I di come from work and I ina di bus, I tell my friend that bike deh favour my bredda bike, but the bike deh under the truck. Then when I reach village, people say how dehn haul the man from under the truck. But if dehn say the man drop off the bike, dah weh di bike di do way under the truck?”
Jordy Bainton was on his way home from work that evening when he met his demise. Up until the time of his death, he was working as a sanitary engineer at Belize Waste Control. His boss, George Lamb says that the BWC family is mourning the loss of a hard working man who routinely rode his bicycle from Ladyville to Belize City and back.

“Jordy Bainton is one of the good employees. His service area will miss him; he is a good guy out there, works well with the residents and even some of our businesses. In his service area, people would even give him gifts because they appreciate his courtesy. He was a good worker; I will certainly miss him. In fact, yesterday evening we were having fun talking about some of the materials he was removing for us and how he wants it because he wants to build his house. The loss is ours and we must live with it. If I had a choice, I would give him a second chance if he comes back, but sad to say he is no longer with us.”

At that time of the day, traffic was thick with commuters heading out of the city. The family believes that the driver of the truck may have been speeding and they are asking for justice in the death of their loved one.

“I know right. And I noh understand how he coulda drop off ah ih bike and ih still end up under the bike. That just noh sound right. We just need justice. He is a hard working man; have ih wife home and ih kid and now dehn noh have nobody now to take care of them.”
While it was an accident, Jordy was the breadwinner for his wife Darlene and ten-year-old son, Anthony. The family is concerned about their well-being in the wake of the sudden death of their loved one.

He noh go ina nobody way or nothing; just straight head from work to home. He get up every morning; ih noh miss wah day from work. He is a hard working person. He love ih kid deeply and ih wife and Ih mom.”
