Elderly Man Dies After Being Hit by Cargo Truck

Margarito “Pulu” Vanegas

Fifty-year-old Teakettle villager, Margarito “Pulu” Vanegas was struck by oncoming traffic on Thursday morning.  A cargo truck was traveling on the George Price Highway, through Teakettle Village, when Vanegas was hit. Vanegas, who was reportedly consuming alcohol before the incident, was attempting to cross the highway when the truck which was travelling in a westerly direction, struck him.  Vanegas sustained severe head and body injuries. He was rushed to the Western Regional Hospital and later to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he passed.  Investigators say that the driver of the truck Edwin Herrera has been served with a notice of intended prosecution.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“He observed a male person walking across the highway but he was unable to avoid hitting the person who was already in the middle of the highway. That person was learned to be Margarito Vanegas, forty nine year old unemployed of Teakettle Village, who received head and body injuries. He was transported to the Western Regional Hospital and later to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where the succumbed to those injuries late yesterday evening. So far the driver of the truck Edwin Herrera has been served with a notice of intended prosecution while the investigation is ongoing. If the evidence so reveal itself then charges will be preferred. We are not saying at this point in time if the investigation proves otherwise then none will be levied based on when the file is complied and sent to the Office of Public Prosecution for her direction.”
