Did Police Officers Let Main Suspect Escape? Williams: “I am thinking something worse than escaping”

Chester Williams

From there, the plot takes a very sinister twist because, as Assistant Commissioner of Police Joseph Myvett explained, members of the Belize Coast Guard arrested three men; including main suspect Oscar Williams, for the disappearance of Derrick Ramirez at Cross Caye.  But Williams was removed from detention by Inspector Kevin Hernandez and another officer and taken to Cross Caye for a supposed field interview.  The inspector of police was the highest-ranking officer at the time and as such had control and command.  It is that officer who reported back to the department that a handcuffed Williams managed to “escape.”  Well, Commissioner Williams is not buying that story and is hoping that the main suspect is still alive.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“There are several discrepancies that we are seeing in terms of the conduct of the police. May I say as well that the inspector in question who took Oscar Williams from the other officers and where the other detainees were is the brother of missing Ramirez. So there is a clear conflict of interest where that is concerned. As far as we are concerned administratively the inspector should not have been part of the investigative team knowing that his brother was the one who was missing and these suspects reportedly or suspectedly may have been involved in the killing of his brother. Nonetheless he was a part of the team and they ventured into something is totally contrary to administrative policies. I must say that we cannot understand how a prisoner can escape from police on an island and from what we have been briefedis that the prisoner was handcuffed. More so, how can a handcuffed prisoner escaped from two police on an island and they could not find him. I don’t understand that. So there are many discrepancies in tier story, many red flags. So we are dealing with this investigation very seriously. But conduct as such that the inspector and this constable were involved in are very seriously and they are not going to be countenance by this administration.”

“So sir, you would agree from what you explained that the public perception would be that these police officers intentionally assisted Mr. Williams in escaping?”

Chester Williams

“I don’t know if they assisted him in escaping. I am thinking something worse than escaping but I am not going cast any aspersion as this time. I will wait and see where the investigation goes. Our interest right now is to find Mr. Williams and I hope by the grave of God that he is alive because if he is not then those officers will have some serious questions to answer.”
