Belize and Refereeing Football
Among the attendees is Glen Ritchie. Having attended a recent summer camp, he dreams of becoming a professional referee and admits that achieving that goal simply means that he has to go through the process of learning all aspects of the sport.
Glen Ritchie, Aspiring Referee
“I’ve been asked by several people to join because they saw potential in me and so being selected by Mr. Contreras and those from my association helped to give me the drive in developing the referee standard here in Belize.”
Isani Cayetano
“What are some of the things that you plan to learn from this course and what you plan to implement as a referee on the sideline or in the game itself?”
Glen Ritchie
“Well, the laws of the game, you know, on and off the pitch. Being a referee and setting a stage for young referees to follow me, that’s my goal pretty much.”
Isani Cayetano
“How would you take what you’re learning here and perhaps implementing it on a community level where you have other young persons who are playing football and may not necessarily know the rules of officiating and that sort of thing.”
Glen Ritchie
“Past couple of weeks ago I did a football camp where I started teaching students or those aspiring football athletes to teach them how to play the game and learn the laws of the game. So that’s what I did and I hoping that I can continue that in the years to come.”
