Opposition Party P.U.P. speaks out against fuel tax
The increases in the prices of fuel since April first, has prompted reaction from the People’s United Party. In a release issued today the opposition quotes verbatim from a statement in the House of Representatives on March sixth, when P.M. Barrow proposed a fuel tax of one dollar per gallon on gasoline and diesel to keep gasoline below seven dollars and diesel below six dollars. According to the P.U.P., fuel in fact went up by one dollar thirty-two cents on April first and that the most recent increase this past Sunday, has taken the prices up to seven dollars and sixty-six cents per gallon of premium gasoline, seven dollars thirty cents per gallon of regular gasoline and six dollars thirteen cents per gallon of diesel.
The P.U.P. calls on the P.M. to honour his commitment since it says the increases will place an additional burden at a time when Belizeans can least afford it.
