Editor hurt as robbers hit Reporter

Story Picture
A man who has spent the better part of his life investigating and reporting crime, today became the victim of one. Veteran newspaper editor Harry Lawrence was bashed on the head with a gun during an armed robbery this morning at The Reporter press. According to Lawrence’s daughter Lisbeth Ayuso, around 7:30 a man entered the offices of The Reporter on West Street and ordered ten dollars worth of newspapers. After handing over the pack of papers, two other men, described as dark-skinned and wearing hats, entered the building. According to Lisbeth, one man pulled a stocking down over his head and pointed a gun in her face. She began to scream, and the gunman ordered her to stop. The other assailant, who was unarmed, proceeded into Lawrence’s office, where he wrestled with the sixty-eight year old editor. Lisbeth’s young son heard the commotion and ran in on the scuffle, which by this time included Lisbeth, who had been shoved into the room with her dad. After repeatedly demanding money, the men finally ran off with only fifty dollars in coins. Lisbeth told News 5 that she felt they were lucky as the gunmen fled out of fear that the police had been alerted. Lawrence was treated for his wounds and released from the K.H.M.H.
