Coney Drive paving begins this week

Story Picture
If you’re a resident of Coney Drive, then you know all too well that when it rains the street becomes a river and in the dry season a bed of choking dust. According to Area Representative Jose Coye, all that is about to come to an end, hopefully in five months when the rehabilitation of Coney Drive is expected to be completed. Works Minister Henry Canton signed the contract on Monday for the upgrading of the one point one mile long thoroughfare, which runs parallel to the Northern Highway in the Coral Groves area of Belize City.

Henry Canton, Minister of Works

“What we’re going to be doing, is lifting Coney Drive to about twenty-four inches higher than it currently is. Then we’re going to put a double bitumen surface on it. In order to do we’re going to have to enhance the drainage on both sides and tie the drainage project into the drainage that currently passes on to the Northern Highway into the river. So hopefully, at then end of the day what we’ll have is a paved two lane highway with proper drainage structure in it.”

Jose Coye, Area Rep, Caribbean Shores

“Coney Drive, like many other areas where there were new developments taking place, the streets when first built were literally dirt roads, and it was quite some time after before we built roads that we consider to be suitable in terms of proper paving and drainage. So Coney Drive has been a problem for the constituency, especially the people who live right on it. So finally we have come to the signing of a contract and we will now commence, about the middle of the month, the actual work to begin and the resurfacing of Coney Drive and put drainage in the area.”

Midsouth Investments Ltd. of Dangriga has been awarded the three million dollar contract for the Coney Drive Rehabilitation Project.
