Kevin Hyde’s Murderer on the Loose
The family of Kevin Hyde of Hattieville, Belize District is still coming to terms with his untimely and senseless killing on Monday evening. Hyde, a forty-seven-year-old security guard employed by City Hall, was waiting for a bus when his life was ended in proximity of the police station. He was to report to work, but never made it as one of two armed men ambushed him as he sat under a bus shed. Hyde lost his life immediately. Police are still investigating, but the family believes that Hyde was at the wrong place and that the gunmen were after someone else. News Five’s Hipolito Novelo reports.
Marie Shepherd, Mother of Deceased
“Before he stepped out from here I said Kevin you know the month that you were born in, you know the year and the day but you never know when you will go. Those are the last words I told him yesterday when they killed him.”

Marie Shepherd is speaking of her son, forty-seven-year-old security officer Kevin Hyde. He was callously killed in a brazen late evening shooting in Hattieville Village on Monday. He had just left home and was waiting under this shed for the bus so he can report to work at City Hall.
Marie Shepherd
“He was in his uniform on his way to work. When he left from work he said give me the time. I said Kevin I think it is four nine. He said that he has to go. He bathe and left. He fixed his lunch. I gave him money for his passage. He said he is going because even before he left I told him to remember to fix the door. Never did I know that a minute later he would go out there and get killed.”
The bus shed is located a few yards away from the village’s police station. Witnesses say that the two men, one armed with a firearm snuck up on Hyde and released a barrage of bullets at him. Hyde was hit multiple times to the body and died on the scene. The culprits, believed not to be from the area, scurried into the bushes and escaped. Shepherd says that the killers got the wrong man.

“It is not him that they want because he has not done anything. They only wanted a security. So they just grabbed a security. Whosoever killed my son and they sent a hit man, look for the right one because if it was another security out there, it could have been black or white , they would have gotten it too because it was a security that they want. He was in his uniform to go to work.”
Hyde worked at City Hall for about three years. Like many of the residents, his mother describes him as a joyful soul who made no enemies.
Marie Shepherd
“Anyone could make friends and he is straight up. If he has anything to tell you he will tell you.”
Hipolito Novelo
“How long has he been working at City Council?”
Marie Shepherd
“Three years. He is a working person. He is always working. Everyone in the village know Kevin. He grew up here with some of them. He born and grew here.”
Hipolito Novelo
“What words do you have for the killers?”
Marie Shepherd
“I just say make God forgive them. I don’t want to any revenge. Whoever did it to think and repent before the time comes.”
