Shooting puts Belize City man in hospital

Story Picture
The commotion on Central American Boulevard had barely calmed down when shots rang out again this afternoon in a neighbourhood not far away. Sherwin Nunez, believed to be in his mid 20’s, is lucky to be alive after an assailant fired three shots at him with what police say is a tech-nine. According to Leopold Smart, around 3:30, Nunez was chatting with them on Fuller’s Alley, off Cemetery Road just five minutes before he heard the bullets.

Leopold Smart, Friend of Victim

“Suddenly I heard about three shots, bam, bam, bam. We ran outside and met a guy we call “Shorty” run inside saying that he got shot in his foot.”

Ann-Marie Williams

“Was he your neighbour?

Leopold Smart

“A good friend of ours. He’s here every time he’s not working, right at our house sitting.”

Ann-Marie Williams

“How old is this boy?”

Leopold Smart

“About twenty-four, twenty-five. I don’t really know what’s going down, we heard a gunshot.”

Ann-Marie Williams

“So he fell down and you took him to the hospital?”

Leopold Smart

“He fell down in the house and me and one of his friends took him to the hospital. I don’t know who’s the guy who shot him?”

Ann-Marie Williams

“Was he hit by a stray bullet? What did he say?”

Leopold Smart

“He just said that somebody shot him. I think they said the guy…I don’t even remember, some Sherman or something like that.”

Ann-Marie Williams

“Intentionally shot him?”

Leopold Smart

“According to him. But I don’t know what going on with them.”

Neither Smart nor the police were able to establish a motive for the mid afternoon shooting.
