Drought May Force Importation of Soybeans

Soybean plantations in Blue Creek and other parts of the country are also being affected by the continuous drought. In Blue Creek, farmers there were expected to plant two thousand five hundred acres of soybeans but instead, were only able to plant two hundred acres. This is a loss of over a million dollars according to Peter Dyck who is the Manager of the Northern Grains Co-Op and Chairman of the Soybeans Group. Dyck says that the drought is so dire that the possibility and need to import soybean is high.

“There is still hoping for rain that they will be able to plant it. If they can’t plant, if the rains do not come soon there will be about a two point three million dollars revenue loss in Soybeans alone. And corn the way it looks right now it will be a two point five million dollars revenue loss. From what I planted right now, we estimated two bags per acre. That is what our numbers are based on. Two thousand five hundred was planned to plan but we only planted two hundred. It will definitely affect us a lot. We won’t have grains to supply. We will have to bring it from somewhere. It is all over the country are reporting big loss in grains already. So I am really hoping that the country will be able to produce for itself but at this point we are looking at importation. Soybeans will definitely have to be imported the way it looks right now. We don’t have any way that we go to the government right now to ask for assistance because most of the funds are being barrowed here in our local credit unions for the grains. I am sure there is way but we haven’t been using it.”
