Environmental Consultant says water bodies across Belize are ill
The New River is not the only water body in Belize that is severely ill. Doctor Ed Boles, an environmental educator and consultant who was one of the presenters at the public meeting in Orange Walk Town last Friday says he has only recently did a study on the state of Garbutt Creek in the Cayo District. The ecosystem there, he says, is also deteriorating.

“This is not just unique here; people all around Belize are having issues with rivers. We just got finished with an R.E.A. on Garbutt Creek that runs through Central Farm. Every institution there are pulling water from the small system and water trucks are coming from surrounding communities and taking water from the system. Now it’s a series of stagnant pools and the same thing is happening there. This organic film is building up on the surface of these stagnant pools, just like it is in these large river systems.”
Doctor Boles has done a number of environmental works in Belize with conservation groups and government agencies alike. He is presently working on a project on the human impact of the Belize River Watershed.
