Police on the hunt for robbers who have struck in separate villages in Cayo

Also on the crime blotter, Police are looking into a string of robberies that have been plaguing the Cayo District. In less than two weeks, two business establishments were targeted by robbers in two villages in the Belmopan area. As we reported before, on August fifteenth Gentleman’s Bar in Saint Matthews Village was targeted by a gunman. On Monday evening, a grocery store in Cotton Tree Village was robbed by three men. Commissioner of Police Chester Williams says that they are still not able to say if the robberies were conducted by the same culprits, but one arrest has been made and the hunt for three other men is ongoing.

Chester Williams

“We cannot say. I don’t know all the details but I am aware of them and I know that in respect of one that occurred in Saint Matthews, I think that the police has made an arrest. We continue to pursue persons we believe are involved in these crimes with a view to be able to get the evidence against them to prosecute. But, as usual there is some difficulty in terms of witnesses or eyewitnesses who are refusing to come forward and give statements but we try to see how we can overcome those hurdles. We are not going to give up. Our job is to investigate, collect the evidence and where the evidence points us we go and if it is sufficient then we make an arrest. So, we continue to work on those robberies.”

“In Cotton Tree, However though, the surveillance footage actually captures clear images of the three perpetrators. I know you mentioned you don’t have details, but anything you can share on that particular one?”

Chester Williams

“I’m not going to go into details. I don’t want to put the persons responsible on alert. But yes we have certain things, certain evidence that we are looking at and I am sure that they are going to point us in the right direction and eventually make an arrest.”
