James Adderly has the weekend in sport
Good evening, I’m James Adderley, welcoming you to this week’s serving of Sports Monday.
The 2009 Belize Premier Football League competition kicked off over the weekend with five matches nationwide. Here in Belize City, F.C. Belize hosted the new and improved Suga Boys Juventus of O.W. inside the M.C.C. Grounds. Early in the ballgame, the new addition to F.C. Belize, Harrison Tasher, displays his skills as he beats the defense to center a beauty that Tyrone Muschamp should have better with. At the other end, Marvin Fuentes, to his delight finds this loose ball which he hammers with a left foot, forcing goalkeeper Stanley Reneau into a flying the save. F.C. Belize comes right back with this press that sees Deon McCauley get blocked by Dario Westby just in time to deny him the goal. It’s more F.C. Belize when this delivers finds Harrison Tasher off set piece only to see Jeffrey Waight come up with a remarkable save. We’re at the thirty-third minute of this ballgame, when this shot from outside the eighteen by Marlon Miranda is poorly handled by goalkeeper Reneau and much the disappointment of the city fans, the visitors goe up by 1-zip. Some twelve minutes into second half, poor defense gives Marlon Miranda a chance to score his second goal of the match. However, this time Reneau does make amends. In the meantime, the home team begins to show some urgency as Harrison Tasher unleashes this vicious grass head burner that is handled by the Juventus keeper. At the eightieth minute, Floyd Jones, fresh off the bench, outruns the O.W. defense to this bouncer and his header ties the ballgame for F.C. Belize and that’s the way you spell relief. F.C. Belize now attacks with renewed vigor when Byron Usher smashes this header into the crossbar, McCauley keeps it alive right back to usher whose attempt gives the home team a 2-1 lead at the eighty-second minute of this ballgame. This score hold ups to the long whistled and F.C. Belize opens this year’s campaign on a positive note.
In action around the league, the San Pedro Bull sharks gobbled up the San Pedro Dolphins 3-2, sub-champions Nizhee Corozal and the Belize Defense Force battled to a 2-all stalemate, Georgetown Ibayani bombed Wagiya 5-zip. Hankook Verdes strung Scorpion 2-zip while the defending champion Illagulei of Dangriga routed Tafari 4-0.
In the meanwhile, round two begins Wednesday seven p.m. out at Ambergris Stadium, where the San Pedro Bull sharks will host F.C. Belize. On Thursday Nizhee Corozal travels to stadium for a seventy- thirty p.m. date with Suga Boys Juventus and at the M.C.C. Grounds, B.D.F. marches against San Pedro Dolphins. In the south zone, the action also kicks off on Wednesday, when Tafari battles Georgetown Ibayani at Toledo Union Field.
Now let’s head to the Civic Center for the Inter-Office Baskeball. At the Civic Center we caught up with the big clash between the Police Department and Cellular Plus/Customs as Ian Galvez jumps against Jarret Tillett at the tip off. Very quickly, Chester Noralez establishes himself as one to watch on the Police team as he steals this pass to go all the way for the first two points of the ball game. Kuslin Hamilton then threads the needle to Reynold Clarke who goes lefty for two and at the end of the first quarter to the Police boasts a 14-3 lead. Early in the second quarter, James Saunders beats everybody down court to get two needed points for Cellular/Customs. He would lead the Customs with twenty-two points. The police answers with this successful three point launch from Kevin Broaster. James Saunders then dishes to Kirk Middleton who strikes for two in the paint. However, Noralez comes right back to sink this three, he would lead the police with ten points in this outing and the half to police is up 29-21. In the third quarter, Richard Garbutt finds Ludrick Beeks down low and Beeks gets the two points for Customs to cut the deficit to five. At the other end, the Customs allows Chester Noralez to fire off this three pointer and he pushes the lead to eight. We’re into the fourth quarter when Customs makes a run at the W. Ian Young wants three, gets three. Nevertheless, Customs scripts can’t break the bad habits of unforced errors, so Adrian Flores steals and goes all the way for the easy deuce. Ludrick Beeks then forces this individual effort that pays off as he gets the bucket and gets the foul make it a four point deficit. With fifteen seconds to go, Customs is down by four, so Ian Young launches this three point shot that counts. Isaac Pasqual who scored nine for the Police hits one of two from the charity strike to make it a two point lead with some seconds to go. Instead of going for the win, Ludrick Beeks of Customs tries to force overtime but comes up woefully short as the Police clubs Celluler Plus/Customs 54-52.
In other action Friday night, Home Protector won its third straight beating winless Central Bank 68-35 and Port of Belize won its first of the season, beating K.H.M.H. 51-40. On Sunday’s schedule General Post Office hurt Belize Healthcare Partners 53-34; Atlantic Bank routed Castillo Sanchez and Burrell 61-37. Belize Electricity Limited disposed of Grace Kennedy 65-23. The Belize Water Services doused the Guardian/Housing Department combination 50-54 and Customs finally got into the win column by stunning Medical and Johnson International 55-52. On tonight’s ticket at the Civic, Tuff e Nuff takes on Y.F.F., Brodies sees action against Kolbe Foundation and the combination of S.S. B. and B.N.T.U. battles Aero Dispatch.
Finally folks, the fifth Pablo Marin Cycle Classic will be staged on May first and travels from Miami Beach, Corozal to the last round about in Orange Walk and then back to finish in the from Miami Beach. While on the female side, the race will travel from Miami Beach to San Pablo and back, make sure you stay tuned.
