Police Department comes down hard on gangs in Twin Towns

Chester Williams

In the wake of the recent gun violence in Santa Elena, the Commissioner of Police has decided to come down hard on what he calls are four troublesome groups in the twin towns. While the police formation there has stepped up its presence, Commissioner Williams has also given directives to enhance citizen security to prevent further acts of violence.

Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police

“I don’t think that it is difficult for us to deal with those four groups, and so I have directed that we must ensure that we bring down all pressure on those four groups; that we do not give them any opportunity to commit any crime and we will do as best as we can to gather evidence against them and get them behind prison. While yes we try our best to work with people we must always understand that we only do so much and when we have person who are hell bent on perpetrating criminal acts then it is our duty to ensure that we do our duty to gather evidence against them for the crimes that they have committed and get them behind prison.”

“When you talk about these four groups sir can we say then that they have a direct link to the recent murder here or is really just precautionary measures being taken by the department?”

Chester Williams

“Well of course tow of the groups are invovled, are a part of the recent shootings and even though it’s only two of the shootings we are going after all four. We are going to do what we call a pre-emptive strike on the others. We are not going to give them the opportunity to join the party so we will go after all four groups. I have discussed with the commander of operations as well in terms of certain things I want to get done through Belmopan to be able to ensure that the citizens of Santa Elena San Ignacio are safe and so we will do that. In that same vein we ask people to do their best as well because we can’t keep everybody safe at the same time.”

Officer Commanding, Superintendent Jemmott says that for the past three days police have been conducting intense operations within both areas and adds that the tension has eased. And while some within the communities may want to think that the violence has trickled down from Belize City as police tightens its grasp here, Commissioner Williams says, not so. These crimes, he says, are being perpetrated by people who live in the respective communities.
