Ya’axché Summer Camp 2019 a Success!

One hundred young men and women of eight communities in southern Belize came together at Ya’axché’s Field Station for a highly interactive and educational week. The annual summer camp focused on educating and increasing awareness on the importance of sustainable forest management and how communities can become more involved. This year’s summer camp was held under the theme “Empowering communities, Conserving biodiversity, Connecting the world”.  Community Liaison Officer Julio Chubs says the children learned about integrated land management, pollinators, and their importance, biodiversity monitoring, protected areas, and climate-smart farming practices.

“We had a two weeks fun filled educational summer camp with children from the Mayan Golden landscape communities to educate children about the importance of forest protection and conservation. We know that Belize still has a forest cover of over fifty percent compared to Central American countries. We want to maintain it that way through the education and awareness of younger generation. We also focused on agro forestry farms where these farms contribute to the protection of forests as well, not only the protection of forest but also the livelihood of farmers in these communities. In the second week we were also able to focus on visiting small business developments within the communities.”
