Arguments in Guatemalan claim released as book

Story Picture
In what must be one of the fastest turnarounds in the history of Belizean publishing, the Government printer has just completed a book containing Belize’s oral arguments in the dispute with Guatemala. The case refuting the Guatemalan claim to Belize, made on May twenty-first and twenty-second in Washington, was presented at the OAS by Assad Shoman, Edward Fitzgerald, Eamon Courtenay, Fred Martinez and Janine Coye. The book contains each speaker’s presentation, along with a foreword as well as valuable appendices including the Anglo-Guatemalan Treaty of 1859, the 1860 letter of Guatemalan Foreign Minister Pedro de Aycinena to his Chamber of Deputies, the 1931 exchange of notes between Great Britain and Guatemala, the 1980 UN Resolution on Belize and the OAS resolution of the same year. The book is being distributed in bulk to schools as well as to the general public by area representatives. Viewers in Belize who can’t wait and would like a copy sent directly to them should call the Government Press Office at 08-20092 and they will oblige, free of charge.
