Titans Kicks of Mas Camp with “Showtime”
As the carnival date draws near, one of the most prestigious bands brought out its a-game on Thursday night. Even though they will not be competing this year, the current, back to back, Carnival Senior Champions, Titans Mas Band hosted the first Mas Camp Night to “kick start” the Carnival activities. Staying true to their motto, ‘A Mas of Class’, the Titans blocked off downtown Albert Street as they showcased their creativity, glamour and diversity. They are known, over the years, for being artistically outstanding when it comes to their design and colour scheme, and this year is no different, as they presented on stage three sections of costumes under the theme, “SHOWTIME”. The energetic revellers gave us a sneak peek of what to expect “pon the road” on Carnival day. Here are the Titans as they performed on Albert Street.
David Matus, Lead Design, Titans Mas Band
“This year we are doing “Showtime” you know when you go to movie, you are going to go see a show, you expect to see glamour. You know all the artist, all the actor5sa re in their best outfits, the latest fashion, so we have a next section called fashion. And you can’t have a movie without having action, so we have three sections: glamour, fashion and action “Showtime.” Well you know right now we are the defending back to back champions of carnival 2017 and carnival 2018. In 2019 we decided to come with a different approach. We are not going to be competing this year but we are going to be out there with 160 members strong. Carnival day we have a lot of surprises but we are not going to do Kind and Queen this year. I have been in the business for over 20 years and this is the best feeling I have had for 2019 that I think this is the trend I am going to do from now on, not competing. The sponsors are happy with us, they fully understand our approach to this year’s carnival and we have good sponsors for this year so we will stay non-competing I am not sure how long but we will stay this way. You know we want to thank all the sponsors all the people behind us all the media houses who are here tonight. The supporters, the revelers, you know everybody. It takes a whole team to put this together. As you can see, outside is ram jam, we are here to put off a good show and everyone knows Titans raises the level, so we are here to raise the level to another level. We have been sold out since May, we’ve been making costumes since January, we have been sold out from May. From Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, we have given out all costumes. So what you see here are costumes for people who have not made it to Belize as yet, foreigners, Belizean Americans who have played mas with us for different years as well as new members.”
And this weekend, the King and Queen competition takes place at the Marion Jones Sporting Complex. Six junior and five senior bands will be competing.
