5 year old killed in hit and run
A hit and run accident in Belize City has left a family mourning the death of their five year old girl. Shortly after noon on Saturday, Keely Oshon was killed on impact when a green Toyota pick-up ran her over as she tried to cross Barrack Road. Keely, her mother and brother, all Hattieville residents, were spending the day at a friend’s house on Barrack Road between the canal and Hyde’s Lane, when the brother went across the street to buy at a shop. Keely, who was playing on the veranda, left the house and attempted to catch up with her brother but was struck down before she could get across the street. Reports to News 5 indicate that the pickup’s driver kept on going following the impact, but a conscientious bystander jumped in his own car and followed the automobile to Buttonwood Bay. There he confronted the driver, forty year old Marcus Lemus, who said he was unaware that his vehicle had hit anything. That explanation did not impress police, however, and this afternoon Lemus was charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving without due care and attention, failure to report an accident and failure to stop and render aid. He was freed on bail of four thousand dollars and a surety of the same amount.
